In 1997, a group of French filmmakers protested against the country's controversial new immigration law. In response, the government minister for urban development challenged the filmmakers to spend a month in one of the housing projects that many immigrants live in. Bertrand and Nils Tavernier did exactly that, living in a Parisian suburb, getting to know the inhabitants, filming their lives and interviewing them about issues of housing, education and policing.
